Which I thought was strange because I thought turtles laid eggs and left. This morning I saw it about 5’ away from where it laid the eggs too. They don’t protect the nest, do they? Because I’m now getting a bit worried. Oh yeah, I believe it’s a a common snapper turtle.
I have a kid and dog, my neighbors have dogs smaller than mine, not to mention the horde of stray cats that live in the area (and let's not forget the kittens either). Anyone know if common snappers protect the nest? I don't think they do, but this one is making me wary.

No they don’t, my inlaws get them every year around this time. They lay their eggs then get out. They’re nasty, and that neck stretches a lot further out than you'd think

I’ve never seen one hang around for long. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Yes, but I'm slso considering how much of a pain removing the shell would be, :)

And messy. Please don’t make soup out of it.

I would look into getting rid of it. They won't chase you down but a small kid or dog messing with it might end poorly. Animal control won't take it but they'll have numbers to people who do.

I was pretty that they don’t protect the nest but they might lay several clutches of eggs. Some turtles do this but I didn’t found any mentioning about snappers.

hell, ask my Granddad.......he’s know as 8 finger Pierce due to those.
And they don’t hang around the eggs, generally. From http://www.ct.gov/deep/cwp/view.…
‘One clutch of eggs is laid in May or June. With powerful hind legs, the female digs a shallow bowl-shaped nest in a well-drained, sunny location. Over a period of several hours, she lays approximately 20 to 40 creamy white, ping-pong ball-sized eggs. After covering the eggs, the female returns to the water, leaving the eggs and hatchlings to fend for themselves. Turtle nests are often preyed upon by raccoons, skunks, and crows. As much as 90% of the nests are annually destroyed by predators.’

Well, I'm on a campground, so it can be their issue. I mean, they have maintenance people.

Yeah, I have a nasty knack of naming critters that come by the house. I named our snapper Potato. I named the massive possum that went by our house once Sparkles. My wife did not like that. When my niece got a dog, I quickly suggested Sparkles for a name, and she loved the name. So they have a dog named after a possum now, :).
